Background and Purpose of the Coordinating Center
From 2000-2004, CDC undertook a formative evaluation entitled Report on Management Approaches of the National ACE Program. This evaluation examined various management approaches of other federal agencies to determine the level of coordination and collaboration needed for multi-site projects, particularly centers of excellence programs similar to the ACE Program. This evaluation demonstrated the need and utility of having a Coordinating Center to: 1) support program specific activities across the funded centers, 2) assist with cross-center networking activities and product development, and 3) facilitate the transfer of center program products and knowledge into youth violence prevention community practice.
Accordingly, beginning Fall 2006, the ACE Coordinating Center was added to the ACE Program. The purpose of the ACE Coordinating Center is to initiate, foster, and support coordinated efforts among the ACEs, UPACEs, and CDC in order to fulfill the overall goals and objectives of the ACE Program. The activities of the Coordinating Center will: 1) enable faster development, synthesis and broader dissemination of ACE specific and cross-ACE activities and products in youth violence research and practice, 2) serve as a key resource for the efficient national translation of knowledge generated by the ACE Program into health and community practice efforts, and 3) facilitate increased collaboration among organizations working to prevent youth violence to support the sustainability of programs and the advancement of national youth violence prevention initiatives.
Goals, Objectives and Activities of the Coordinating Center
Goal 1: Create/Establish the ACE Coordinating Center
Objectives and activities to support creating/establishing the Coordinating Center include: 1) building and maintaining the necessary infrastructure to support the Coordinating Center’s efforts, 2) building and maintaining communication, data and organizational systems, 3) establishing and supporting the Steering Committee, 4) establishing and monitoring the work plan of the Coordinating Center, and 5) evaluation.
Goal 2: Strengthen the National ACE Program and its Leadership Capacity
As a primary objective to support strengthening the National ACE Program, the Coordinating Center will initiate, foster, and support coordinated efforts among the ACEs, UPACEs, and CDC through facilitating communication, dissemination, and collaboration.
Specifically, objectives include: 1) supporting faster development, synthesis and broader dissemination of center specific and cross-center activities and products in youth violence research and practice by facilitating cross-center communication, developing/disseminating a quarterly newsletter, and creating and maintaining the Coordinating Center website, 2) consulting with and provide assistance to Centers of the National ACE Program as requested on development/implementation of dissemination for products, research findings and programs, 3) serving as a key resource for the efficient national translation of knowledge generated by the ACE Program into health and community practice efforts by developing/disseminating products (e.g., quarterly newsletters, website, fact sheets, etc.) that include appropriate translational components to a broader audience and coordinate resource and information sharing for media-related requests, advising/facilitating ACE Program policy work, and developing and maintain website about ACE Program that is accessible and understandable by general public, 4) facilitating increased collaboration among organizations working to prevent youth violence to support the sustainability of the National ACE and partner programs and the advancement of national youth violence prevention initiatives through interpersonal contact, regional meetings, newsletter, existing cross-site workgroups, annual national ACE meetings, and facilitating information exchange between public and federal, state, and local partners, and 5) assist in developing a strategic plan to achieve the goals and objectives of the National ACE Program.

In order to ensure that the goals of the Coordinating Center are being addressed in a responsive and effective manner and that the ACE stakeholders have appropriate input and involvement, a Steering Committee has been established comprised of PIs or their designees from the individual ACE sites and key CDC staff. The overall function of the Steering Committee is to provide direction and oversight for the various Coordinating Center activities. The Steering Committee will also have a more significant role in designing and implementing a strategic plan for the advancement of the National ACE Program. The Steering Committee would serve as key advisors to help identify topic areas/activities that Coordinating Center working groups or a subset of the ACEs could address to meet immediate and/or long-term National ACE Program and national youth violence prevention needs.
